Which State Has the Most Golf Courses? A Golfers Paradise…!

Golf in the United States is very popular in most areas, however, there are some areas of the US where golf courses are very prevalent, and this article will highlight those areas.

Below, I have pulled together a list for which state has the most golf courses and included other honorable mentions.  Without further delay let’s get right into it!

Top 6 States with the Most Golf Courses

  1. Florida
  2. New York
  3. California
  4. Texas
  5. Ohio
  6. Michigan

1. Florida

The answer to which state has the most golf courses is Florida, and that definitely is no surprise.  The Sunshine State has a climate and landscape that is practically built for golf

The exact number of golf courses in Florida is right around 1,250.  The number of golf courses in Florida is constantly fluctuating, but that is the closest number that is available on the web (source)

The part of the state that has the most golf courses is in Palm Beach County which is in the southeast part of Florida.  The county actually has the most golf courses out of any county in the entire United States!

Some of the most famous golf destinations in Florida are TPC Sawgrass, PGA National Golf Club and the Streamsong Resort.

2. New York

In the discussion about the state with the most golf courses, New York comes in at second.

New York has right around 1,000 golf courses, and some of the courses are cornerstones in golf history.  I am sure that you have seen quite a few of the elite golf courses in New York on television before while watching the PGA Tour.

Places like Oak Hill Country Club and Shinnecock Hills probably come to mind!

Not only are there a lot of golf courses in New York, but they are of great quality.

3. California

The large state of California comes in at third on the list of states that have the most golf courses.

According to this source, there are 921 golf courses in the state, making it a golfers paradise.  With courses like Pebble Beach, Spyglass Hill, and Torrey Pines, it certainly is impressive.

The diverse landscape, excellent climate, and large population make it a perfect state to have a large number of golf courses.

4. Texas

The number of golf courses in the state of Texas is right around 900.  The warm climate and large landscape make the massive state a perfect place for golf.

The most famous courses in Texas are Dallas National, Cordillera Ranch, and Whispering Pines.  There are also quite a large number of other notable golf courses in the state.

5. Ohio

Ohio may not be the winning state with the most golf courses in the United States, but with around 800 courses it is still very impressive.  The exact number is not known but the general consensus is around 800 golf courses.

Ohio is certainly one of the best states in the US for playing golf with nationally recognized courses like Muirfield Village, the Inverness Club, and The Golf Club.

6. Michigan

Rounding out the list of the states with the most golf courses is the beautiful state of Michigan.

While it may not be well-known, Michigan is actually one of the most beautiful states for playing golf.  Some of the most relevant golf courses in Michigan are Crystal Downs, Oakland Hills, and The Lost Dunes.

According to this source, Michigan has 650 golf courses.

Besides the states that I have listed in this post, there are other honorable mentions for states with the most golf courses.  Some states that come into mind are Pennsylvania, Illinois, and North Carolina.

If you are talking about the opposite, the state with the least number of golf courses, it is Alaska.  Alaska is a state that is awful for golf with their climate most of the year so there is only about 30 courses in the whole state!

The state that has the most golf courses is Florida, and it does not look like any other state will overtake that number in the near future.

It is fair to say that the best state to go and enjoy golf is the Sunshine State due to the quality golf courses, number of golf courses, and warm climate.  Another reason is that there are so many golf courses to choose from, so you will not have any problem getting on the course somewhere.

The numbers are continuing to grow in the state, and it could be one the path to 1,500 golf courses sooner rather than later.
