Signature Hole – The short 121-meter par 3 6th is my choice of signature hole.

It plays from the tee over a stream that cuts across the fairway and then splits to cover both sides of the heart-shaped green.

A heart-in-mouth shot!

A Robert Trent Jones Jnr design, his mandate was to build a bold layout that would test the player’s skill and resolve.

The course encapsulates mature woodlands, stunning limestone canyons, lowland marshes, and upland prairies.

The diversity of holes on the track and the fast, firm greens will make this an experience to remember.

The course has 19-holes, with hole no 6 split into a or b.

Signature Hole – The 189-meter par 3 17th is the signature hole, and leaves no bailout area off the tee.

Played over water that protects the left side of the green, the deep bunker on the right should be avoided.

Get the distance right and fire away.

The facility hosts 2 x 18-hole courses of which the East is the longer and tougher.

Host to The Oaklahoma Open annually, it is challenging, but also enjoyable by all skill levels.

The 1st 12 holes are solid, but then the last 6 increase the intensity.

A walkable course, with subtle terrain changes and a few drastic elevation changes, the artificial mounding, water hazards, and abundant bunkering, keep the pressure on.

3. Jimmie Austin Golf Club | University of Oklahoma

Signature Hole – The 422-meter par 4 4th is the signature hole and plays its distance.

A straight tee shot sets up the approach over water to a sloping green.

Get the distance right.

Bishops Creek runs through the middle of this layout and the South Canadian River plays its part on several holes.

Rolling hills, native grasses, and stunning Bur Oaks are ever-present as the round progresses.

Fast, raised greens with contours to make an accurate target golf a winner.

The holes and setting are beautiful but can play tough off the tips.

4. Peoria Ridge Golf Course

Signature Hole – My choice of signature hole is the stunning 180-meter par 3 4th.

It plays to a wide but narrow green over water.

It’s all about club selection.

Set in the rolling hills of Northeast Oklahoma, the links-style layout has some testing holes but offers a good fun experience for the mid to high handicap golfer.

The rolling, slightly undulating fairways and mounds, create a magnificent setting to play golf.

Doglegs both ways, thick rough and the wind creates the challenge.

Be prepared to use all the clubs in the bag.

5. WinStar Golf Course | Scissortail

Overall Rating: 91.1
Fun Rating: 92.1
Shape Rating: 91.6

4 tee options available.

Signature Hole – The 163-meter par 3 17th is the signature hole with water lurking on the left side of the green.

2 sets of bunkers guard the right of the green but are the better miss.

A classic design utilizing the natural features of the property and is set in a flat river valley.

The routing of the holes is outstanding and a unique feature is the red sand in the waste areas.

A variety of holes keeps the accomplished golfer on his toes, but also allows for the beginner to finish the round with some satisfaction.

The easier of the 2 courses at this complex.

6. Winter Creek Country Club | Winter Creek

  • Site Link
  • Location: Blanchard, Oklahoma.
  • Par: 72
  • Length: 6,495 meters off the Tips and 5,785 meters off the Front.

PLAYER RATING

Overall Rating: 91.2
Fun Rating: 94.5
Shape Rating: 87.8

3 tee options available.

Signature Hole – My choice of signature hole is the 174-meter par 3 11th.

Played from the tips it challenges the golfer to carry the lake and then wraps around the left side of the green.

Two large bunkers are located behind the surface.

Pick the right club and let it fly.

Located in the heart of Oklahoma.

Winter Creek was designed to create a special experience for all skill levels to take up the challenge and enjoy the beauty of the surroundings.

Fairly wide, with large Oak tree-lined fairways, protected by pampas grass and strategically placed bunkers.

The course winds its way around 14 lakes, which increases the challenge.

Forced carries over water and 90 sand traps will test the player’s ability out of the sand.

7. Forest Ridge Golf Club

forest-ridge

  • Site Link
  • Location: Broken Arrow, Oklahoma.
  • Par: 72
  • Length: 6,447 meters off the Tips and 5,406 meters off the Front.

PLAYER RATING

Overall Rating: 90.3
Fun Rating: 92.1
Shape Rating: 88.5

4 tee options available.

Signature Hole – The 394-meter par 4 16th is my choice of signature hole.

Played to a narrow landing area off the tee, the 2nd shot has to carry a lake to the green.

A precision shot will get you home, but don’t hit it left into the drink!

The layout winds its way through narrow tree-lined fairways, with doglegs both ways.

Grass depressions, mounds, lakes and ponds, and well-placed bunkers provide a stern test for all skill levels.

Elevated tees played to narrow landing areas require accuracy off the tee.

The ability to move the ball both ways in the air will be a huge advantage.

Bring your A-game and there is little respite on this demanding track.

8. WinStar Golf Course | Redbud

winstar-golf-redbud

  • Site Link
  • Location: Thackerville, Oklahoma.
  • Par: 72
  • Length: 6,505 meters off the Tips and 5,340 meters off the Front.

PLAYER RATING

Overall Rating: 90.2
Fun Rating: 88.8
Shape Rating: 91.7

4 tee options available.

Signature Hole – The 166-meter par 3 18th is the signature hole.

Water covers the left side from tee to green, so the bailout is right.

Select the correct stick and make birdie or par.

Part of a 36-hole Casino Complex, the course winds its way through the Red River Valley.

On this track, not every approach shot is through the air, and many bump and run options into the green make for interesting play.

The architect has achieved a well-balanced layout, with testing holes and others not too tough.

Play from a tee the suits your game and get the most out of the round.

9. The Greens Country Club | Greens

greens-country-club

  • Site Link
  • Location: Oklahoma City, Oklahoma.
  • Par: 71
  • Length: 6,207 meters off the Tips and 5,684 meters off the Front.

PLAYER RATING

Overall Rating: 89.7
Fun Rating: 91.0
Shape Rating: 88.4

2 tee options available.

Signature Hole – The shortish 425-meter par 5 is my choice of signature hole and is a radical dogleg left off the tee.

A risk and reward hole tempting the player to cut the corner and shorten the approach shot to the green.

Having achieved this, the approach to a bunker-protected green with water lurking on the right is a challenge.

A course designed for all skill levels to play and enjoy.

Numerous doglegs demand placement off the tee.

Skill and control on the wedges and short irons are well rewarded.

The elevated, fast greens create tension when trying to keep a scorecard going.

A feast of challenging holes makes for an enjoyable round.

10. Rose Creek Golf Club | Tour 18

rose-creek-18

  • Site Link

  • Par: 72
  • Length: 6,442 meters off the Tips and 5,622 meters off the Front.

PLAYER RATING

Overall Rating: 88.5
Fun Rating: 91.1
Shape Rating: 85.9

2 tee options available.

Signature Hole – My choice of signature hole is the 407-meter par 4 16th which plays to a gentle dogleg left off the tee.

Water, water everywhere as the approach shot to a smallish green has water on the left.

Play it straight and walk off with a par!

A links-style layout with plenty of challenging holes.

Water comes into play on 12 of the holes and natural grasses line the fairways.

The fairways roll through natural terrain, with mounds, tree-lined creeks, and 50 strategically placed bunkers to contend with.

The greens are tricky and offer little respite for an inaccurate approach.

Enjoy a special links outing.

Final Thoughts

Playing any of the 240 courses on offer in Oklahoma will bring pleasure and a challenge.
